September is National Emergency Preparedness Month

"At home or at work, routines can be disrupted with little or no warning by natural disasters, fires or other catastrophic events. Don’t wait for an emergency to think about being prepared.
National Preparedness Month, sponsored each September by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Ready campaign to increase public awareness of emergency preparedness, urges four basic steps: get a kit, make a plan, be informed and get involved."-National Safety Council

It only seems fitting to repost this in case you missed it:

In today's economy you can never be too prepared. But sometimes its hard to put the time in that is required to really be ready for an emergency. Or its just one of those things that you put off thinking, "Someday I'll get around to it."

For Christmas my parents once got us all 72 hour kits. They we
re awesome presents because its one of those things that you really want and should have, but find yourself wanting to buy yourself something more fun.

If you're looking for a really unique and thoughtful gift, you should check out our Emergency Binder Inserts.

In case of an emergency, say a house fire, wouldn't it be nice if you could save all of your most valuable documents? I used to keep all of them in an old filing cabinet but you won't see me running out of our burning home carrying that! An emergency binder is a place to store birth and marriage certificates, passports, social security cards, home insurance information, car insurance information, emergency cash, missing fliers for your family members, etc. Its all in one convenient place that is easy to grab on your way out the door.

This is a 25 page PDF template that you can print out and use to assemble your own emergency binder.

PDF Template includes pages outlined for each family member (including pets) with current information should you get split up in an emergency situation. Emergency contact list, tax information, titles and insurance, a place to store internet passwords and more.

Where you decide to store your emergency binder is up to you. Some people prefer a fire proof box, others a safe, some a safety deposit box, and others in a
closet closest to their exits for easy access. Help get your friends and family prepared today with the security of an Emergency Binder! You can buy the inserts here for $3.99 and its available for immediate download.

  1. wouldn't this stuff be safer in a fireproof safe up on a shelf somewhere near the front door - like the coat closet?

  2. I just found you on Pinterst, and I must say, this is a FABULOUS idea. I have some "emergency" things in place as we have 3 children - but putting it like this is a great idea. We live in Germany right now so it is even more imperative that I remind the children that emergency dialing is 112 and not 911.

I will be sharing this blog post with my homeschool group and other places too! Stop by sometime and say hello :)

  3. The only problem I see with this is someone breaking into your house and being able to steal all of your most valuable documents in one swoop. If I weren't worried about that, I would do it.

    1. that's exactly what I was thinking

    2. Yes that is a possibility, which is why we keep ours in a fireproof safe that is a big gun sized safe weighing hundreds of pounds so you can't carry it out of the house without a forklift! Also some people put theirs in a safety deposit box.

    3. Honestly when someone breaks into your house they are not thnking oh look a school binder. They are looking for other things. THe one I have is a red binder and does not have a cover so that way I am the only one that knows about it. I have it backed up on the internet and my computer (password protected), and it is not a bad Idea to send it to a family member in case you need it. I have mine in a plastic baggie with my emergency prep stuff by the front door.

    4. We store ours in a big ziplock bag in the freezer... easy to grab on the way out and not a likely place for thieves to look...

  4. Another great thing to include in the binder would be discs containing digital photo back-ups, so you don't lose your family photos if there is a disaster or someone breaks into your home and steals your computer equipment.

    1. Hi Jenn,
I'm so sorry you haven't seen your packet. My records show I emailed them to you on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 2:44 PM. My guess is they are in your junk mail folder. If you still don't see them email me at aimilino01@gmail.com and then when I send them they will go straight to your inbox in the reply message.
      Thanks!

  7. We are the in process of setting up a church preparedness fair. Would the $3.99 for the kit make it okay to make multiple copies for each person? Just want to make sure we don't break copyright law. :)

  8. NEVER EVER put ur SS cards, birth cert., and passports in the same location. This is a common sense NO, NO! This binder is a good idea for other family important info. such as emergency contacts, monthly budget, grocery lists, etc. but not for ur identity.

  9. I totally agree with Charlenesell, NEVER EVER put all your personal info in one spot! If someone steal your passport, it will be harder to copy your identity as he doesn't have your SS number and birth certificate. But if everything is in the same spot, you're screwed! Same goes if you're travelling!

  10. Great idea and great extra ideas from comments.
Another idea to be extra safe is to scan all important documents and have them on your computer , then get Carbonite.com to back your computer up!! It is backed up daily to their server, cost only about 59$ per year and you can access the files for anywhere if needed. This way you have everything you need and all your computer stuff is also safe.

  12. Great idea. I would add into it your most treasured family photos on a USB or CD's. Photos are the things that people would miss most if lost in an emergency, and this way you at least still have some if not all of them.

However I have to agree that this needs to be locked away somewhere - it would be a burglar or identity thiefs dream to stumble across this!

  13. Great idea. Just purchased one now. Can't wait to start organizing.
Didn't ask for my email address though. It's the same as my PayPal address.

  14. I love this idea and honestly I keep mine on me and have photocopies is a ziplock in my preps. I seriously doubt anyone is going to break in just to get my binder, not to mention if it was stolen you can immediately report it and the thief is more likely to be apprehended quickly. Most identity theft issues happen because the victim is unaware their info was stolen.

    1. I do not sell physical copies of the inserts. The idea is to buy the digital download and then you print them out yourself. I hope that helps!

  17. Bought this about a month ago And when I looked through it, I realized it only has pre-made pages for Mom, Dad, and kids. How do I add the other adults in the house? (Some have Grandma or Grampa, or an Aunt or Uncle permanently residing.)
